Budgerigar
The budgerigar is one of the most popular pets in the world. It is affectionate, small, and inexpensive, making it a good choice for first-time bird owners. It is capable of mimicking human speech, although if kept in pairs, it will tend to use bird-chatter.
Name | Budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus, or “budgie” |
Origin | Australia |
Size | 7" (18cm) |
Color | Green with yellow head and black and yellow wings in the wild. |
Lifespan | About 10 years |
Personality | Inquisitive, playful, chatty, can mimic human speech. |
Diet | An all-seed diet should be avoided, as it contains too much fat for small birds and often leads to health issues. Instead, sprouted seeds, grains, legumes, and peas provide your bird with neccessary nutrients. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and parsley, and orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots, are also ideal. |
Supplies Needed | Budgerigars need a cage with bars appropriately sized for them, cuttlebone, and perches about a half inch in diameter. They should also have toys, and fresh water available at all times. |
